A B C D E F G (part 5)

Sadly Glasgow Fort offered no links with ancient Scottish heritage as suggested in yesterday's blog.
It is a Retail Park! In other words, a large collection of shops (like every other large collection of shops!) arranged in an arc round a huge car park with a direct link to the M8. Note the little open area in the woodland.
At the focus of the arc are the bus stops, one for buses to Glasgow, and one for buses from.

In addition to fbb's 60/60A, the Fort "bus station" of two stops under a pretty canopy is served by other routes; here is a full list ...
... complete with bludner in fbb's graphic. 60A runs to Milngavie.

The X19 is run by Stagecoach, a remnant of the original Magicbus competitive venture, ...
... Hendrerons 310 was mentioned yesterday and the 222 (an old Eastern Scottish route number) is run commercially by McNairn's coaches, one of the players on the on-going "Monklands Bus War".
The short workings from Petersburn do not run on Saturdays and there is a reduced "through" service on Sundays. The vehicle, by the way, has also seen service with Manchester Community Transport and Scarlet Band of County Durham. The rest of the Fort routes are First Glasgow.

Despite the obvious delights of the recently opened "restaurant" block with Vue cinema ...
... and numerous other refueling establishments on the main quadrant ...
... fbb decided to continue on his route 60 to the Easterhouse shopping centre in the hope of finding a traditional "caff".
The "mall", small by today's standards, is called Shandwick Square and, like the whole area, has seen better days. The toy bus is the best bit!
It was probably state-of-the-art when it opened!

The propinquity (posh word, eh?) of Glasgow Fort has clearly led to its decline. But, outside the mall ...
... having eschewed TGI Fridays etc. fbb found himself ensconced in MacDonalds ...
... tucking in to Louisiana Chicken.
fbb is not entirely sure what it consisted of but there was a slab of chicken, bits of bacon, mysterious green leaves, and some cheesy goo all topped off with a dark brown slime. Delish! The tea was good as well! Most of the clientele was young mums stuffing chippies into the ever open maws of their pre-school offspring. The "restaurant" had the added benefit of providing your elderly blogger with an essential PNB**.

Before we set off on our 38 back to Glasgow, one question remains. Where was the fort?
Almost surrounded by the retail park is Provan Hall.
Provan Hall (also known over time as Provanhall, Hall of Provan, 'Hall Mailings and Blochairn House) is a historic place composed of two buildings built about the 15th century and situated in Auchinlea Park, Easterhouse, Glasgow. It is owned by the National Trust for Scotland and managed by Glasgow City Council. It dates to the 15th Century and is "a fine example of a fortified dwelling".

From fortified and remote mini-community to gi-normous shopping experience; there's progress for you!

Time to catch our 38 back to the City.

And, just in case you have become confused (perish the thought!), the 38 terminates at Easterhouse, i.e. Shadwick Square; as do the 19, 43 and 46 . The 60/60A and 41 (also Stagecoach X19) terminate at Easterhouse, i.e. Lochdochart Road aka the scheme (estate).
The 222 terminates at Easterhouse, i.e. Glasgow Fort ...
... which the First Bus network map calls ...
... Fort Glasgow. Public Transport is so straightforward. SimpliCITY in fact!

  1. I had one of those Louisiana Chicken burgers at Cobham services on the M25 when returning from Southampton a week ago. I think the advertising indicated that it and a beef version were only on the menu for a month or so.
