Choose The Right Answer???

NOTE : In Bible "picture language" Zion was once a hill on which Jerusalem was built; later it was used as a word for Jerusalem itself. Over the years Zion then became a name for the "New Jerusalem", i.e. Heaven.

There is a good, posh, word that covers today's topic. It is eschatology which is the study of last things; death, judgement, heaven and hell. So a funtime topic for CHRISTmas.

But the Bible makes it very clear that there is a good reason to be concerned about sin. No sin can ever enter God's perfect heaven because any sin, however tiny, would make it imperfect. So sin deeds dealing with.

So Jesus died on the cross to carry with him the sins of the world, past, present and future. So if we accept his offered but often undeserved forgiveness, we can go to heaven.

The ideas of Hell in words or pictures range from eternal torment ...

... to an eternity of hopeless nothing; so not nice either way.

Whatever your belief (or lack of it) it would seem unwise to treat Hell as a joke!

And if you contrast it with heaven there is even more reasyoin to think hard about your life choices and their route to eternal choices.

In the days after that time of trouble the sun will grow dark, the moon will no longer shine, the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers in space will be driven from their courses. Then the Son of Man (Jesus) will appear, coming in the clouds with great power and glory. He will send the angels out to the four corners of the earth to gather God's chosen people from one end of the world to the other.

So here is the bad news. If Jesus gathers "God's chosen people" to join him in glorious eternity ("Heaven") what about those who have rejected God? That's where "Hell" is on offer.

Whatever illustration people have devised for heaven ...

...  be it "golden city" or "perfect country" ...

... such ideas can ony be an earthly (and thus limited) attempt to describe something that can never be described because by definition it is beyond human understanding. The words do not exist to describe anything that comes under the general heading of "eternity".

So, instead of trying to double guess he detail, maybe the easiest things is to understand that there is a choice.

Right from the very beginning, from the bad choice made by Adam and Eve to the oft repeated offer of God's presence, help and forgiveness to those that "do it God's way", the choice runs like a thread through the whole Bible.

Here is one of the oldest passages (Book of Deuteronomy) ...

Today I am giving you a choice between good and evil, between life and death. 16 If you obey the commands of the Lord your God,[a] which I give you today, if you love him, obey him, and keep all his laws, then you will prosper and become a nation of many people. 

I am now giving you the choice between life and death, between God's blessing and God's curse, and I call heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Choose life.

And Jesus to his people - those who please God.

Seems simple enough.

Zooming to Zion looks like the best deal. Turning the deal down would appear to be risky. Remember that what we believe never changes the truth, it is just an expression of our response to the truth.
