There never was anyone called Jesus! But before Bible knockers cry out with delight, "At last he has seen sense!", please note that the Saviour of the World was called Yeshua (in Hebrew and Aramaic) by his parents on God's instruction. It means "God Saves".
Another Yeshua fought the battle of Jericho (Joshua) and yet another Yeshua was a major prophet of the Old Testament (isaiah) and a slightly less major prophet was also called Yeshua (Hosea).
But from about 600BC the prophets were foretelling a Messiah who would be Immanuel (God with Us) and a Saviour of the World.
OK, the Messiah that the people hoped for was supposed to be a political or military leader.
Jesus was neither.
Mary seemed to ponder that "Saviour" meant "Death". The song "Thorn in the Straw" by Garth Hewitt hints strongly about the Crown of Thorns.
Mary and Joseph took the baby, aged one year, to the Temple to be "dedicated" and an old man called Simeon greeted the child as if he were expected. But Simeon's "song" was not totally joyful.
The child's father and mother were amazed at the things Simeon said about him. Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother, “This child is chosen by God for the destruction and the salvation of many in Israel. He will be a sign from God which many people will speak against 3and so reveal their secret thoughts. And sorrow, like a sharp sword, will break your own heart.”
When Jesus was about two years old the Magi (NOT Kings!) turned up, as Matthew tells us, "at the house where Jesus was." So NOT at the stable!!
The BIble does not tell us how many Magi there were, and it doesn't tell us that they wore different silly hats.
It is likely that they were students of scriptures from the Zoroastrian religion. (NOTE : should have saved them for tomorrow's blog!)
The Bible does report on three gifts, less than attractive to a two year old who would really have enjoyed a box of Lego!!
GOLD - for a King, King of eternity
FRANKINCENSE - for a Priest, the Way to God
MYRRH - for embalming dead bodies. So the baby grew up. And he fulfilled all three child-unfriendly but prophetic gifts.
He died and rose as we saw back with letter "R".
But there was something more. This is from Mark's Gospel Chapter 13:-
In the days after that time of trouble the sun will grow dark, the moon will no longer shine, the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers in space will be driven from their courses. Then the Son of Man will appear, coming in the clouds with great power and glory. He will send the angels out to the four corners of the earth to gather God's chosen people from one end of the world to the other.
Jests would be coming back!
And within years of the resurrection, some Christians were expecting this "second coming" soon, despite being told by Jesus not to speculate.
Christians are still expecting!
Which leads us to letter Z.

May we all spend a moment
remembering whose
special day it is today!
