Seeking Solutions at St Ives - 1

How Many?

There is some debate as to which St Ives is the heart of this clever little ditty.
Those that claim Cornwall rather than Cambridgeshire seem to forget that Cambridgeshire was the place for sacks of cats or even corn; whereas Cornwall would be more appropriate for baskets of fish or even a truckload of bars of tin!

But, in this case, fbb and Mrs fbb were likewise going to St Ives. Excitingly, they were planning to interchange there between the 17 bus from Penzance (ORANGE) and the 16A back to Penzance (PINK).
Details of this expedition will follow next week. But from the map it seems simple. You get off the 17 at "St Ives" and you get on the 16A at "St Ives".

When fbb last visited the town, without passing a gaggle of cat carrying wives, the process was quite simple.

Interchange was at the excellent but minimalist bus station.
It was also a coach station and had its own diddy waiting room ...
... with toilets round the back. It could be a bit hairy with waiting and alighting passengers, buses ...
.. and cars nipping to and from the railway station car park (down a long slope) ...
... all mingling happily with pedestrians passing and cars passing in both directions on the public highway.

All was made reasonably safe by the employment of whistle blowing, gesticulating and shouting bus company staff member who guided the buses and accosted any foolhardy passengers who dared to walk on the wrong bit of the asphalt!
There was no room for the luxury of paved waiting areas or barriers to mitigate suicidal pedestrians.

But it worked well.
... despite being very tight for turning space ...
... even more tighterer now big buses are bigger!
Anyway, the prudent fbb checked the timetables. Here is the current 17 ...
... terminating at the "Bus Station". Hitherto the bus station was called Malakoff, the name of the road passing said interchange.

The 16A, however will have no truck with bus station or Malakoff, but offers its jolly passengers either Tesco ...
... or Cinema.

fbb guesses that the Leech Pottery is not in the town centre.

But it gets worse. Google maps mentions nothing of bus station or Malakoff for the 16/16A ...
... and, despite a diligent on-line search,  your dedicated blogger could find neither Tesco nor Cinema within sack of cats throwing distance of the historic terminus. The stop is now called 'The Terrace'.

But the bus station did have the appearance of a terrace ...
... overlooking beach and bay. Here is a view of the beach with the bus station "terrace" in the foreground.
Maybe a renaming of Malakoff?

More tomorrow.

  1. The Tesco is the one some considerable distance south at Carbis Bay, hence the eight minutes travelling time from there to the Royal Cinema, where there is often a gaggle of small buses to the various holiday parks in the area.
