Collecting Callertons
As well as the Callertons already copped by collectors, old maps show a Little Callerton, now over-built by the Darras Hall Estate. Maps show the extent of today's planned development with articles referring to Upper Callerton ...
... another one for our growing collection! It is fun, but probably futile fun, to try and match the above site plan with the existing road network.
Elsewhere we find the name Callerton Park, not a park, of course, but a bucolic name for another lump of housing.
Bus Lane : Bewildered Look
What does appear to be agreed, despite different naming conventions, is where, in reality, Stagecoach Bus 63 terminates.
But whatever you do, do not use Traveline's map!
The topmost bus blob marks the terminal turning circle, equipped with undewhelming facilities for waiting passengers ...
... with a reminder that 'Westburn' is the developer of that bit of East Middle Callerton.
Traveline correctly identifies the terminus as Thistle Way whereas Stagecoach sticks to the full, but generic estate name.
Apart from the fact that the Traveline map has multiple ugly and potentially confusing zigzags, there is a bit of a mystery. To subvert a superfluity of scrolling, here is the Traveline map again.
As the 63s use a very nice turning circle (topmost blob), what journeys perform that huge terminal loop. The loop runs via an entrance to Whorlton Hall ...
Butterlaw Farm, Callerton village and back via the main road to join the advertised route 63 at the roundabout, bottom right.
Somehow, fbb thinks not!
Here is the road northbound from the Thistle Way terminus ...
... followed by a very sharp left hand bend; then more narrows.
An even sharper right hand turn, then a long narrow stretch to Butterlaw Farm ...
... leads to a final escape from a highly unlikely bus road, just north of the real, original and genuine Callerton village!
The rest of the estate is behind that scrub!
Who thinks that Mr Stagecoach would ever be running his 63s that way?
... and the only "Callerton" in its innards is the ancient Callerton village. Computers can be so stupid at times - or is that stupidity the prerogative of those who program them. Either way, the Traveline map is crackpot!
Where will this "controversial" bus lane materialise, linking East Middle Callerton with West Middle Callerton?
Thankfully Google Maps knows how to plot a bus route accurately ...
... on to an electronic street map. So why is Traveline so awful?
fbb suspects that the computer system is trying to route the bus to serve the "Callerton" of the final time point ...
But we digress.
The blue lines of the Google Earth view below show where current thoroughfares are in use.
The road across the picture from bottom right to to top left is the narrow (and definitely bus-less) Whorlton Lane as pictured above. Entering from lower right is Balsam Way which ...
... does NOT join Whorlton Lane despite the link of the blue lines above. Entering from Upper left is Hodgson Close ...
... which has temporary barriers in front of woodland. So a link via a widened Whorlton Lane between Balsam Way and Hodgson Close might be developed as this proposed bus lane.
Might that route lead to the reported "controversial" culling of 375 trees?
Lets hope Bellway has counted them. fbb suspects he would call some of them simply bushes if the above picture of greenery is really from the site - which it probably isn't.
fbb has spent a ludicrous amount of time trying to find detailed plans of the bus, bike and walk link.
There aren't any!
Maybe that is because detailed plans are in the hands of Bellway Homes, the developer of this bit of "new" Callerton. BUT there is a location map.
Sadly, we do not have a plan of the planned bus "loop", possibly because no one has planned it yet!
What we do have is a Google Earth picture of the doomed trees. Readers may like to count them! The bus lane will run from Balsam Way (bottom) ...
... to Hodgson Close (too).
50 trees and bushes, maximum?
