Manchester And Faeroes

Metroline Manchester

Dateline Sunday 5th January
It would be quite a job getting all these up and running for today's morning peak. Pictures posted yesterday included some saying farewell to Stagecoach ...
... some snapped at Piccadilly bus station late on Saturday night.
There were pictures of Bee Network buses being prepared overnight on Saturday ...
... with cold and stressed staff peering at clipboards by the light of a silvery torch!
There were staff adding stickers to non Bee Network buses ...
... and a "concours
d'inelegance" making its way through "precipitation" to occupy their new but old garages.
Sunday is the quietest day of the week and nothing had appeared on-line at 1800 last evening to suggest any significant problems.

But there is (was if you are reading this after 0900) the Monday morning peak.

fbb will be garnering any news from Cottonopolis for later publication.

Watch this space.

To Get To The Faeroes ...
Don't start from here in the winter, apparently. From top to bottom we see the current departures FROM The Faeroes for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday by way of examples. Obviously Copenhagen, capital of the "home country" is a key destination.

Click on these schedules for an enlargement - there are three separate graphics.

It would appear that Edinburgh and London are served during summer months only. Like so many airline web sites, information is clearest if you actually want to book a flight - general timetables are hard to find - if any exist.
The company also runs inter-Island helicopter flights for which detailed timetables are available! They look complicated and fun! Just a sample below.
click on the image for an enlargement.

On-line there are several accounts of the trip from Edinburgh ...
... which, in one case, started with a tram from Princes Street ...
... to the airport; costing £9.50 return.
And so from terminus tram stop ...
... into a busy terminal.
The vlogger was pleased to see his plane arrive from the Islands, as weather can disrupt schedules at short notice.
Coffee, tea and water are free of charge in-flight, but the usual extras (small portions?) are available at a price ...
... and there is always the really exciting in-flight magazine to enjoy.
Atlantic Airlines is a very grand name for a company with a fleet of just six planes including helicopters.

Soon The Faroes are in sight and examples of the rugged beauty of the Islands are obvious straight away.
And with a slight jolt, the plane has landed ...
... and unloaded.
So how do you get from Airport to Torshavn?

Of course there is a smart blue bus ...
... service 300, for the hour's run into the capital.

Of which more tomorrow.

Sunday Variety

Manchester's Massive Metroline Mobilisation

After the floods ...
... it continues all weekend.
So not the very best weekend to start a brand new bus network with a brand new company, lots of brand new staff, several brand new old garages and a huge fleet of brand new buses.

And this happens after the Christmas Holiday when "management" will have been off-duty for a fortnight.

And it all starts TODAY!

So nothing can possibly go wrong?

The biggest winner in the "who runs what" Bee Network lottery part 3 is Comfort Delgro company Metroline. The biggest loser is Stagecoach, owners of "Greater Manchester South" since privatisation. Stagecoach is only left with its Stockport depot and operations.

Here is the list of all the "Tranche 3" winners.

Bus watchers close to the Manchester scene think that Metroline offered a competitive (that means "better deal") bid which might well be difficult to sustain.

The word on the street is that PTE bosses are trying to manage aspirations by hinting that "there may be a few teething troubles in the first few days".
You bet!!!

Metroline is optimistic; but they would be!
Here's what they say:-
That's rart grand!

fbb confidently predicts some sort of omnishambles at tomorrow's morning peak even if today runs smoothly!

Mancunians will hope he is wrong!

Lurking in the daftness of this huge challenge for Metroline was another problem. What do you do with over 100 brand new buses until you can get at your brand new old depots.

Answer, park them in South Wales ...
... at Comfort Delgro's Adventure Travel depot at Taffs Well.
 Photos by Roger French

Time for a song - based loosely on a similar ditty about teddy bears.

If you went down to Taffs Well last week,
You'd sure have a big surprise.
If you went down to Taffs Well last week,
There's buses galore in disguise.
Ev'ry Bee-bus that ever there was
Was gather'd there for certain because
Sunday's the day when Metroline
Starts their network!

Each little yellow bus
is on Manchester routes today.
Watch them, catch them as they pass
And see them running on their new network!
See them gaily gad about
They love to play and shout
They'll never make any fuss!

Then late at night their drivers and bosses
Will take them back home to bed
Each a tired little Bee-net bus.

If you go down into town today,
The buses may well be a mess.
P'raps chaos down in the town today,
Your journey may never progress.
Ev'ry Bee-bus that ever there was
Will gather there befuddled because
Today's the day when Metroline
Starts their network!

There will be many bus managers in Manchester extremely anxious about tomorrow's morning peak!

Not New But A Soft Launch.
This euphemism usually means that not too much is happening (yet?) so we are not making a huge fuss OR; you've seen it happening already and this is just a bit of ancillary PR.

Anyway, First Bus drove a couple of their new electric buses into Guildhall Square in Portsmouth a few days ago ...
... and parked them up for all to see.
There was an interview for the local press, but nothing for YouTube.
"The man" spoke at length about First's commitment to zero emissions by 2035, about the smooth and quiet ride and about the love that the drivers have for these vehicles.

He also spoke about this being a First bus investment in the future.

It isn't.

These electric vehicles are far too expensive for a commercial business. So they are being heavily subsidised by the government's ZEBRA scheme for Zero Emission Buses - which they aren't. Making the buses, making the electricity and making and disposing of the batteries is very far from zero emission.

And every taxpayer is footing most of the bill.

How Much?
fbb is amazed at the price of Model Railways today, but astonishment knows no bounds if your interest lies with European models and some of the top manufacturers.

No further comment is needed!
And it won't even work on a UK layout with standard two rail track. Marklin has a stud contact system. The line of studs in the centre of the rails carries the power feed to the locos. See the line of little prongy things in the centre of the track sample below.
It is like three rail but you can't see the third rail very well.

Left-Handed Or Right-Handed
The "Fault" in this picture was that the sidecar was "on the wrong side"; unless it was visiting from America, for example.
These two pictures, from a USA bikers' web site, would definitely match the wrong 'un in the 1930s "fault" picture!

Puzzle Picture 1
A long-closed railway station but recently restored.  As a clue, the line ran through the longest railway tunnel in the world. To be fair it held that position in 1832!

Puzzle Picture 2
Nothing to do with Public Transport although camels and a donkey are sometimes wrongly cited. Which Christmas Day TV programme contained at least two hidden Biblical references?

And what were they?

Answers soon.

This is the weekend of the fbb's Fellowship Meetings and the leaflet distributed in advance to the "congregation", other local folk and many supporters contained a reminder that Christmas may end officially this weekend but ...

Christmas is for every day.

Here is a sample of what C H R I S T M A S can mean all the time!

Sturday Variety (mini Blog)

Please Note:  Faeroes report will be published on Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th Jan. This will explore, briefly, ferries, country buses and take a look at the airport. Apologies for the change of plan. It relieves pressure on our Fellowship meetings which happen on Sunday and Monday!

Science Fiction Or Vehicle Fact

The above suspended railway image is both unrealistic and definitely science fiction. fbb doubts that the design would be strong enough to hold such a huge vehicle traveling at speed and, additionally, cope with the lateral forces on curves. You would also need a huge amount of power to move that thing.

Here is a blurry enlargement showing the driver and fireman (?) at their seats.
The Bennie Railplane was unworkable for similar reasons.
Sadly, a very young Mrs fbb did not have the bottle to climb up the steps to explore the rotting hulk as it stood at the bottom of her road on the outskirts of Milngavie.

But the idea below also became a short-lived working proposal!

Created by one Mr Steinwinter to increase the capacity of Germany's busy autobahns, it too did not last.

This video tells the story/

We are nearly there with some modern coaches, but built in one lump and with better visibility for the driver.

Mersey Tunnel Mini-posts

The first police vehicles and the Birkenhead underwater junction as first built but with added colour.
The same location with heavy 1930s cloggage ...
... possibly photographed on the opening day?

Red Cola Christmas?

Sure to be the famous Coca Cola festive truck?
Well, actually no! It is a close copy from ...
Lidl! Lidl Cola is branded "Freeway" but, surprisingly, in a red can.
A Birthday You May Have Missed
It was the oft maligned Dr Richard Beeching who proposed that freight should no longer travel in weedy wagon loads but be plonked into containers to travel in fast "Liner" trains.

And thus began the "container revolution" on the UK's railways ...

... complete with shiny white overalls for some staff!
Liner Trains was one of the many things the Great and Good Doctor got right.

Not Quite Right, Interwebnet!

This picture appeared on-line in amongst red buses from Torshavn (Faeroe Islands) and the blue country fleet.

fbb can remember no episode of "On the Buses" in which Stan Butler took a wrong turning at Luxton and ended up on a ferry to the Faeroes. Blakey would not have been pleased!

It's NOT All On Line

The fbbs' washing machine has been in steady decline (like the fbbs themselves!) over the last year or so. First the paddles inside the drum started falling off. All attempts to get spares to fix in place failed. Then in recent weeks the mechanics have been sounding like the Paddle Steamer Waverley at speed ...
... but with severe indigestion.

So, on Thursday inst, Mrs fbb called in to the local Washing Machine Shop and spoke to Damien. A replacement was ordered and paid for at 12 noon.

Two hours and twenty minutes later Wayne and a colleague arrived and installed the replacement.

Eat you heart out AO!

Part of the Christmas Story ...
... but Later.

They went into the house, and when they saw the child with his mother Mary, they knelt down and worshiped him. They brought out their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and presented them to him.

It is quite amazing how many modern readers let the story of the Wise Men (a k a Magi; a k a Astrologers; a k a Astronomers) pass them by as a "pretty" anecdote. It was far from "pretty".

Matthew recorded the visit (which took place about two years after the birth of the baby) because he wanted his fellow Jews to understand that the child was God's chosen Messiah (a k a Saviour of the World) and that the way to obtain Salvation was to recognise what really mattered about CHRSTmas.

GOLD
What people needed was the GOLD of an eternal heaven - far more important that blundering about in this earthly life. But getting there wold not be easy. God would not welcome anyone with the stain of sin, however small - and put up your hand if you have never committed a sin!

Sin's the problem.

INCENSE
What God wanted was for people to join him in a glorious GOLD eternity. But human seemed unable to come up to God's standards. So they faced a closed door to a heavenly future. But if someone could become THE WAY ...

 MYRRH
Bluntly, Myrrh was used for embalming dead bodies. Its pungent odour would partially disguise the pong of necrotic tissue. This was a good thing when burying in the ground was impracticable.

Some groups burn the body, as do most people in this country.

So Jesus came to die! And, thankfully, to rise from death in the third day.

And his death was a substitute for the permanent death sentence we deserve for our suns.

THE END?

But for a committed Christian who "repents" and seeks forgiveness IT IS NEVER THE END!

The words of the hymn aren't quite what Charles son of Samuel wrote, but the music is most definitely from Felix son of Mendel.

Tomorrow is Twelfth Night!
