The Horrors of High Green (3) ...

It Most Definitely Isn't Sheffield's Number 1!
Time will tell whether the renumbered services are a commercial success; but the changes to be introduced on November 1st do seem to be change for change's sake. We must assume that the proposals made by the "Partnership", but actually from TAS consultancy, are based on sensible research; but at first glance some of the decisions seem odd.
On the south side of the city there is a great deal of sense in merging First's service 48 with Stagecoach's 79 to provide a joint service into City via Hemsworth. But travelling northbound from city centre to High Green, things get a little more complex. There are two possible routes between City and Pitsmoor.

present service
Currently (until October 30th) there are:-
buses to Shiregreen via Rock Street (47 and 48)
buses to High Green via Burngreave Road (75)
buses to Wincobank and Meadowhell via Burngreave Road (76).
buses to Parson Cross via Burngreave Road (83/83A)
buses to High Green via Rock Street (87)
buses to Shiregreen via Burngreave Road (88)

revised service
From November 1st there will be:-
NO BUSES to Shiregreen via Rock Street
buses to Wincobank and Meadowhell via Rock Street (3)
buses to Parson Cross via Rock Street (83/83A)
ALL BUSES to Shiregreen via Burngreave Road (75, 76, 88)
ALL BUSES to High Green via Burngreave Road (1/1A)

There are two possible routes between Fir Vale and Firth Park

present service
Currently (until October 30th) there are:-
ALL BUSES to Shiregreen via Hucklow Road (47, 48, 88)
NO BUSES to High Green via Hucklow Road
NO BUSES to Shiregreen via Firth Park Road
buses to High Green via Firth Park Road (75)
buses to Wincobank and Meadowhell via Firth Park Road (76)

revised service
From November 1st there will be:-
buses to Shiregreen via Hucklow Road (88)
buses to Shiregreen via Firth Park Road (75, 76)
buses to Wincobank and Meadowhell via Hucklow Road (3)
ALL BUSES** to High Green via Hucklow Road (1/1A)
NO BUSES to High Green via Firth Park Road
NO BUSES to Wincobank and Meadowhell via Firth Park Road

Time will tell whether the renumbered services are a commercial success; but the changes to be introduced on November 1st do seem to be change for change's sake. And, yes! It did need saying again.

** As no service currently turns left from Hucklow Road into Stubbin Lane at Firth Park Roundabout, there are no suitable stops for the shops and library.
Existing stops are on the Google map at bottom centre and top left; both useless for shopping bag carrying passengers. Hopefully the South Yorkshire PTE, Sheffield City Council, The Bus Partnership or Jim and Sid in the van will have thought about this. Surely they all wouldn't let one of the main services via Firth Park not have a stop at, er, Firth Park?

Wouldn't they?

Then there is the Travel South Yorkshire timetable for services 1 and 1A.

That has just a few problems.
Somehow it doesn't look like a service which is the same between Hemsworth and High Green with the exception of the route in Ecclesfield. If the timetable "shape" is correct the two services only impinge at Hemsworth Blackstock Road, Sheffield Arundel Gate, Pitsmoor Burngreave Road and Chapeltown Lound Side.

Summat's up!

A great deal is "up". But we will need to save that until tomorrow. There is only so much Horror an innocent and emotionally unsteady blog reader can possible take at once.

But just to prepare ourselves, here is the "list of stopping places" for service 1 from Travel South Yorkshire. As usual this only shows about half of the "stopping places" and includes several names that are either listed in the wrong order or utterly misleading.

Jordanthorpe, Dyche Road, Dyche Lane, Batemoor Road, Dyche Lane, Meadowhead, Bochum Parkway, Norton, Norton Lane, Hemsworth, Blackstock Road, Gleadless Valley, Newfield Green, Gleadless Road, Arbourthorne, East Bank Road, Norfolk Park, Lowfield, East Road, Heeley Bank Road, Highfield, Charlotte Road, Shoreham Street, Eyre Street, Sheffield, Arundel Gate, Waingate, Wicker, Burngreave, Spital Hill, Burngreave Road, Pitsmoor, Firshill, Barnsley Road, Fir Vale, Firth Park, Hucklow Road, Stubbin Lane, Sheffield Lane Top, Barnsley Road, Shiregreen, Ecclesfield, Highgreave, Cross Hill, The Common, Chapeltown Road, Chapeltown, Ecclesfield Road, Lound Side, Lane End, Worrall Road, School Road, Worrall Road, Greengate Lane, Mortomley Lane, Wortley Road, Thompson Hill, Hague Lane, Potter Hill Lane, Cottam Road, High Green, Foster Way

As usual, all the places shown in RED are either in the wrong place geographially, or misleading, or just plain wrong.

Apart from these minor snags (ha ha!!!) everything is helpfully all ready for the start of the Partnership scheme on Sunday 1st November.

Isn't it?

 9 DAYS TO GO

We will conclude this little series of High Green Horrors with a last, desperate look at that 1/1A timetable.

Paper copy timetables are promised from Sunday 25th October.

Next Horror blog : Friday 23rd October
