The Excellent X53 (3)

But Fragile For Forward Forays
The "old" (Summer 2015) X53 provided three through journeys between Exeter and Poole; the full "Jurassic Coaster".
And three full-length runs in the opposite direction.
Indeed, if your dedication to bus travel was extreme (or insane!) you could catch the 0900 from Exeter, enjoy 21 minutes in Poole and get back by 1840. Whilst few would tackle the round trip, many have done the trek in one direction linking the opposite leg by train. Umpteen years ago, fbb travelled from the Isle of Wight via Westbury to Exeter, then X53 to its original terminus at Bournemouth and back to the Island.

Sadly such through journeys are nowless avaialble and connections are very poor. There are two "through" paths from Exeter (one not available on Satyrdays) ...
... and two from Poole.
The schedules offer plenty of opportunity for refreshment breaks and breaks to get rid of some of the refreshment! But "cross-border" travel is not likely to be too popular. But fbb was catchng the 1336 from Weymouth with a five minute change at Lyme and an opportunity to have a look at the X52 back to Seaton

Ideal.

But what a silly blogger he was!

There was the X54, enjoying its leisurely layover right next to the X53 stand.
If the timetable is correct, the X53s arrive at Weymouth at xx36 and depart at the same time. fbb's bus was a couple of minutes late arriving and then had to load a respectable 30 excited souls.
The consequence of a 5/6 minute late departure then materialised spectacularly at Abbotsbury. The "to Wemouth" working passes at xx09; fbb weas due past at xx04. Guess where the twain were to come together? Here at the junction of Rodden Row and Church Street ...
... where the main road turns sharp eight for West Bay and Bridport.

... and the meeting was full on but at 90 degrees.

Fortunately on-coming 1409 had enough room to back up a bit and the 1404 was able to reverse down Church Street (on the left).
After a certain amount of mutual shuffling, the manoeuvres allowed on-coming to be on-going and, with a little more delay, fbb's vehicle proceeded towards West Bay - arrival 12 minutes late. Here another clutch of passengers ensured that departure was 15 minutes late.

5 minute connection with X52 - phooey!

In fact the X52 was running late as well, but frustratingly as fbb turned into Bridport Coach Station the X52 turned out. Connection missed. Also on board was a lady "of mature years" who was travelling all the way from Poole to Exeter complete with huge case and only slightly less huge hand luggage. (So there are a few who do!)

She was not at all pleased!

The admirably patient driver advised 9A from Lyme Regis but did not know the times. In steps fbb, already prepared for this particular back-up. "1535 from Lyme Regis."

The X53 stopped at the Square in Lyme at exactly the time of the 9A of which there was no sign. Mrs Lotsa-Luggage asked fbb three times when the bus was due, then attempted to read the timetable, then accosted three other waiting passengers. They were not from Barcelona but, in true Manuel style, they knew nothing. By now she was in full panic mode.

At 1545 the errant 9A passed on its way to Kingsway, about 15 minutes late.
It was, of course, the first day of Devon County Show at Westpoint.
Westpoint is on the A3052 just outside Exeter.

Whilst waiting for this excitement to evolve, fbb was then accosted by two "little old ladies" with their travel problem. "Why is it," their spokeswoman aggressed, "that the times of the X53 on the computer are completely different from the times at the bus stop?"

Good question.

But fbb was also able to download the old X53 timetable from which the extracts at the head of the blog were taken. The internet is full of out-of-date stuff; Webberbus is all still there, for example and Mrs Grumpy's X53 timetable is present on:-

As the dear lady said, "How am I supposed to know that the internet is wrong. I don't know which company runs it, its just the X53. I've never heard of Traveline, what's that?"

She has got a point, you know. But then it is all on the internet!

But there is a deep seated question here. If the service X53 is difficult to run to time on a dismal Thursday in May, what is it going to be like when (if?) we get some sunshine and the visiting holidaymakers seek bus travel?

... which may explain the twittering on the "national" web site. And, yes, it is fuzzy on-line as well.

Tomorrow, running even later than an X53, we will look at a brand new bus station.

  1. There is a clue in the BoS tweets ending in 2/? and 3/?. In fact it was a series of five, each restricted to the 140 maximum character message allowed by Twitter. Reference to the first "Station Rd closed 23rd- 27th for bridge works. Services 1,2,25&28 towards Taunton Rail Station diverting from Station Rd via 1/?" helps, but it would have been clearer to calculate beforehand how many messages were needed for the full info (which is otherwise identical to that on Facebook).

  2. Thanks Man! But why wasn't this significant diversion shown fully on the "proper" web site complete with map and stop locations. Twits are not the best way to communicate complex information. Kilkenny is in the Republic of Ireland. Who would know where or what Kilkenny was in Taunton?

  3. Twitter is used by many ops for diversion details (albeit with website links in some cases) I think because it is easier for customers to look at on a phone than trying to wade through a website. I have little experience of Facebook to know how it fits between these two alternatives.

  4. I concur in re your comment in re timekeeping.
    I ventured (under the old timetable) to catch the 11:15 departure from Weymouth to Lyme Regis, there to connect with a return bus to Dorchester and back to dear old Lunnon (from which I had eminated with a £15 SWT special ticket). This was in March 2016.
    The bus arrived at 11:02 (4 minutes early) from Poole, and was a seriously knackered decker (Barbie 2 livery, I think). About 35 souls alighted, leaving about 5 remaining on board.
    The relief driver arrived at 11:08, conversed with the original driver, set up his cab and commenced boarding at 11:14. About 35 souls boarded in 6 minutes, which wasn't bad considering that around 20 were of foreign origin, and had to have fares and tickets explained to them.
    We left at 11:20, with all windows shut tight, so the temperature was seriously hot. Unfortunately, the bus had had a heavy clean the previous night, so the smell of disinfectant blended well with the odour of old people wrapped up like Uncle Bulgaria!
    No worries, thought I, 22 minute connection at Lyme Regis, that'll be fine. However, with traffic delays (in March?!), compounded with a severe lack of oomph from the bus (the climb out of Abbotsbury was completed at a maximum speed of 3 MPH, with a cyclist nearly managing to overtake us!). On arrival at Bridport, 15 minutes late and with the odours making me quite queasy, I noted the prospect of another driver changeover and decided to abandon bus . . . the prospect of my 22 minute connection at Lyme failing was just not worth remaining onboard.
    This was in March, so I suspect that, if I do return to sample the through journey, I'll need to build in a degree of "buggeration" time.
    Frankly . . . if it looks good on paper, it doesn't mean it'll work in practice. 5 minute connections, which seem fated to fail, are not good for repeat business.
    Still . . . I don't suppose it'll really matter . . . .

Re the timekeeping question, the answer is badly, if past experience is anything to go by: think Lyme Regis at the height of the summer, on the earlier timetable with buses full and running at least 40 minutes late, and the Square packed with people waiting for very late buses. TBH the system of public and private transport in that area needs to be thoroughly reviewed and managed completely differently if the same old issues don't keep recurring year after year, although the confined spaces and steep hills of Lyme Regis can't really cope that well with summer crowds to begin with.
