We left oir friendly 75 and 76 in simple stability. The core route between Firth Park and Wooseats remained unchanged since 1968. Likewise, the Southern arms to Batemoor ...
... anf Low Edges ...
... had settled into a suburban routine. In the north the 75 ran one way round the huge Shiregreen loop ...
... and the 76 ran in the opposite direction.
It was simple although the public timetable was secretive about routes in the Shiregreeb area. For operational convenience and passenger confusion, some 75s used the 76 roite round the estate whilst some 75s ran like 76s.
At least both routes appeared on the same table.
To be fair, First did overcome this "which way round" dilemma buy showing the two terminus stops a Shiregreen separately, as above.
Very hejpful, NOT!
In order to preserve the sanity of his readers, fbb will gloss over a series of derogatory route changes and take you straight to today.
Travel South Yorksire begins its current non-leaflet by giving a barely intelligible and utterly wrong headung.
Buses stopped running to Parson Cross and Fox Hill ...
... almost as soon as they started!
So as a replacement for a tidy loop tound the Shiregreen estate, we now have only the 75 via Bellhouse Road ...
... doing something similar to its previous trajectory.
But the 76 is now radically different from its former close friend.
Here is the 75 from City via the old Shiregreen route ...
... and here is the 76 via it's tradition route - for a while..
Between Fir Vale and Firth Park, the 75 ...
... again follows a differnt route from the 76.
For the map and bus operating nerds, this is the first time that ANY Sheffield bus service has run from Fir Vale, the Hospotal (
RED road) and Stubbin Lane (
ORANGE road) ...
... to Firth Park.
Why?
Then the 76 blasts off to Wincobank ...
... and Meadowhell via two different routes. The journey at Tinsley is for school days only. The 76a serves Sandstone Road then "ditect" to the shopping heaaven, whilst the 76 runs via Newman Road and Low Wincobank, not identified on the PTE map or the PTE timetable!
76e (for
evening) journeys call at Sandstone Road, then double back to run via Low Wincobank and this to confuse passengers!
So what serves the bit of Shiregreen that was formerly served by the outbound 76?
Welcome back the 47 and 48. These used to run alternate ways round the full estate "loop". Now they run the same way round a smaller and completely different loop ...
... which has never been served like that before ---- ever!
Confused.com?
DHas any public transport academic done a learned study to work out how many passenhers are lost for ever by these complex and ill-explained schemes? Many 'lost' customers will never return to the bus.
Remember, also, that, in recent years, there has been no printed tinetable information to help passengers cope. So it is likely that they haven't!
Q.E.D.
It is worth remeemberung that there has been no significant change in the areas served by the 75 and 76 for roughly sixty years.
