Persecuted Passengers Ponder their Position

From earlier this week, it was all change again at The Strand Torquay. The Torbay Council posted the above notice on line accompanied by the appeal (above in bold) inviting readers to share the information. Presumably this exhortation is because there was no other source of the plans and lots of residents would not be eagerly scanning their computers every day to see what might be happening.

The web pages went on to list all the bus routes and give details of the revised diversionary arrangements for each in turn. There is no bus map!

But there is a map for motorists!! Here is just an extract as it is HUGE!

Best of British with that, folks - hope you have planned a few days away rather than try to understand it. Actually, of course, it is six weeks away as the work will not be completed until the end of November.

But it will be wonderful for The Public Realm?

Back to the buses. Fortunately, Stagecoach have provided a revised map. Here is the original ...

... and here are the new details - but not very detailed!

Lets deal with the easy bit first. As The Strand is closed to all vehicles, the one remaining service that runs that way (22 GREEN) is diverted via the back way to St Marychurch and a shuttle bus (22S LIME GREEN) runs from Torwood Street to connect.

But at the other end of The Strand, Carey Parade, the shopping centre Fleet Street and Union Street are closed as well at The Strand.

That means that the stops on Carey Parade that have replaced those historically on The Strand are now moved further away to Torbay Road!

This means in consequence that buses double run to the roundabout near Torquay Pavilion (above bottom left) then access the rest of the town via Belgrave Road, a considerable distance back away from The Strand.

Carey Parade is bottom right on the above map, Belgrave Road disappears off-shot upper right.

As far as fbb can see (and it is only a guess because the information is so inadequate), the nearest stops to Fleet Street are either The Pavilion and walk up, OR ...

... a choice of Lucius Street or the Library and walk down. Either way is less than convenient; both are exacerbated by Torquay's hilly geography.

But it will be wonderful for The Public Realm?

At least there have been warnings!

Some less hopeful than others.

fbb has yet to log any specific report on the actuality.

Perhaps they have all gone away for six weeks!
