Long lengths of ...Some interesting thoughts here.

Long lengths of segregated bus lane or guided busway should merge the best of light rail (which people want, is seen as fast, but in reality is restricted to a fixed network which may be some distance from the passenger's origin or destination) with the best of aspects of the bus (being able to get into housing estates, and right through the shopping area etc).

However, I have a horrible feeling that opposite is true. It's still seen as a bus, and it doesn't go where most people want to be.

Would First style Streetcars or Dublin Gliders make a difference to opinion? In Bristol the Metro Bus vehicles have a special livery, but are the same shape as many "ordinary" buses in the city; in Glasgow it seems to be a standard liveried bus with some stickers.

Off bus ticketing, whilst disliked by some, is more a "metro" thing, and if you're waiting at the stop why not use that time productively rather than delaying the bus with multiple transactions. But the Glasgow example suggests that roadside machines would be little used.

As and industry we have to try these things, but I really think we need to try harder (but I'm unsure in which direction to focus attention) as we've not unlocked the potential yet.
