I began my career with a operator who had recently starting acquiring a fleet of LNs, and at one depot, the staff were wondering why they had to replace the rear brake shoes several times, while the front ones seemed to be hardly worn - leading to doubts as to whether the front brakes actually worked!

Alan's comments seem to confirm that it was essentially an urban bus, but owing to the political contortions of the day, it was more often used as on rural/interurban services, for which it was not really suited. Overall, I don't really think it was a great leap forward from the Bristol RE, which was largely used on similar work. Certainly, the LN resolved the structural problems of some of the early rear engined single deckers, but the RE was already better in that respect. From the perspective of fuel consumption and operating costs, the RE was definitely better, and those were very important factors in the 1970s.RC169https://www.blogger.com/profile/03921368833118123055noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7432323264902617108.post-23478640958615368082012-03-13T10:37:39.058+00:002012-03-13T10:37:39.058+00:00From a passenger's point of view, though, the ...From a passenger's point of view, though, the first Nationals were a pain to travel on! One had a problem with its air line in its first week and promptly sat down in the middle of the town centre, causing a lot of unhappy bunnies.Daddysgadgetshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12892897553855129226noreply@blogger.com
